Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority’s School Safety App
The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) has taken a proactive step towards enhancing the safety of schools in the region. They have recently developed a user-friendly mobile application called the ‘School Safety’ app, designed to assist schools in creating comprehensive School Disaster Management Plans (SDMPs).
Encouraging Preparedness Through Competitions
To encourage schools to actively participate in the preparation of SDMPs, the HPSDMA has announced a series of competitions. These competitions aim to recognize and reward schools that excel in disaster preparedness. The top-performing school will receive a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, while the next three best entries will be awarded Rs 50,000 each. Additionally, the six other best entries will receive Rs 30,000 each.
It’s important to note that only SDMPs prepared until September 30th will be considered for these prizes, which will be awarded on October 12th. This incentivizes schools to promptly and effectively prepare their disaster management plans.
Practical Preparedness with Mock Drills
Preparing for disasters is not just about paperwork; practical preparedness is equally crucial. To ensure that schools are well-prepared for various emergencies, a mock drill has been scheduled for October 13th. This drill will focus on addressing potential disasters such as landslides, flash floods, fires, and earthquakes. It is a practical way to test the effectiveness of the SDMPs and enhance the readiness of schools.
Promoting Disaster Risk Reduction
Aside from the app launch and competitions, the HPSDMA is actively engaged in promoting disaster risk reduction in the region. They will be celebrating the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction as part of their efforts.
The celebration will be conducted under the banner of “Samarth,” a demand-driven and placement-oriented umbrella skilling program initiated by the Central government. The 13th edition of Samarth is scheduled to take place from October 1st to 15th. It will include various events and activities at both the state and district levels.
These events will encompass exhibitions, workshops, street plays, memory walks, and diverse competitions. By involving communities at the grassroots level, the HPSDMA aims to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction and preparedness among the masses.
Promoting Safe Construction Practices
As part of their efforts to mitigate disaster risks, a ‘gram sabha’ will be held on October 2nd. The focus of this gathering is to address monsoon-related disasters and promote safe construction practices. These practices are essential for creating structures that are resistant to hazards such as landslides, earthquakes, and fires.
The launch of the ‘School Safety’ app by the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority signifies a significant step towards enhancing the safety and disaster preparedness of schools in the region. Through competitions, practical drills, and community engagement initiatives, the HPSDMA is actively working to reduce disaster risks and build resilient communities. Schools and communities in Himachal Pradesh are encouraged to participate actively in these endeavors to ensure the safety and well-being of all.
